For ten years, Danny Wakefield has been fighting for the LGBT cause, and this time, he has taken a stronger stance: as a birth-giver.
The power of bringing life into the world is difficult to put into words, but these photos of the birth have captured that profound moment. Such is the journey of American influencer Danny Wakefield, a transgender man who gave birth to his daughter, Wilder Lea, last Saturday (28), after ten hours of labor.
In a series of six emotional shots, Danny is seen sitting in an indoor swimming pool, doing everything he can to welcome his child into the world with love and nourishment. And in the final click, we witness the significant moment. The baby is lying on his chest, and her father can’t help but embrace her for the first time.
“This is the moment my Wilder met the world. She latched on so quickly after I started pushing that my labia tore, and I needed internal stitches. While they heal, I have four lips, and I’ve never felt such a strong resemblance to battle wounds in my entire life.”
Before sharing the intimate birth images, Danny also posted a video showing his determination as he pushed until the very end, ensuring his daughter’s safe arrival. Another noteworthy moment was when he held her on the side of the birthing pool, holding her hand and wearing a protective mask against the coronavirus – a necessary precaution during the ongoing pandemic.
For those who desired a closer look at the newborn’s expression, Danny shared an emotional photo of his daughter lying on his chest, engaging in skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth. The proud father declared, “All parents speak the truth—this is the most incredible experience of their lives.”
Prior to his daughter’s birth, Danny dedicated ten years to important work on the internet, raising awareness about respecting transgender individuals. However, as his body grew during pregnancy, his focus shifted towards promoting a kinder perspective on what it means to be a plus-size mom.
In his final post, although still a work in progress, he offered a thoughtful reflection on the subject. “This body is still a work in progress, and that’s okay. When I looked down at my body, I saw a beauty I had never seen before,” wrote the influential figure.
“At first, I felt insecure about my weight gain during this pregnancy. A few months ago, I was suddenly weighed at the emergency room, and I felt immediate embarrassment. I was ashamed of my body gaining 70 pounds. I was ashamed that countless people’s judgment made me dislike nearly everything about myself. But, as @brenebrown says, silence is a petri dish for shame, so I spoke out about it,” Danny continued.
“I sat with my shame without trying to silence it. I embraced it as something new to own, and gradually, that shadow disappeared. My body is big and beautiful, and it doesn’t matter how people stare at me.”
Danny emphasized that three years ago, he received constant compliments for being thin. However, what people didn’t know was that he was struggling with meth addiction and was sicker than ever.
Therefore, Danny’s plea extends to all individuals, especially those struggling with addiction or dealing with body image issues. “Please stop making assumptions about other people’s bodies. You never know what others are going through or how close they are to death, regardless of how ‘good’ they may look,” he stressed.
The influencer also shared a message of support for those who follow him and are battling addiction: “If you’re struggling with addiction right now, I see you. You are worthy of life and recovery. We can recover, and when we do, our greatest dreams come true.”
